About Gastric Band Surgery

The Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Band surgery is a restrictive weight-loss procedure in which a silicone band is placed around the stomach to create a small upper-stomach pouch.

The band acts as a funnel to delay the emptying of food from the upper stomach into the lower stomach, thus restricting the amount of food that can be ingested, and helps the patient to feel full for a longer period of time. Since there are no internal incisions made, and no re-routing of your intestinal tract, the laparascopic adjustable gastric band surgery is only restrictive, not malabsorptive.

The band is connected by soft tubing to an injection port placed in the abdomen under the skin. Adjustments are made to the band by your bariatric surgeon. This is done by injecting saline into the port to provide more restriction. The saline can also be removed from the band should there be a need to do so.

Your Success Depends on You

Success with the laparoscopic adjustable gastric band is dependent on follow-up with your surgeon and the NewStart team. Generally, you will need to come to the NewStart office approximately once every six weeks for follow up visits for the first year.

This is necessary in order for our registered dietitians to provide appropriate post-operative education, and for your bariatric surgeon to assess your hunger levels and need for a saline adjustment.own text
