What is Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery?

The Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass is a surgical procedure designed to provide a lifelong tool for patients dealing with obesity. As a result of this surgery, your appetite and the quantity of food you are able to eat is reduced, thus classifying this surgery as restrictive. Additionally, the surgery is considered malabsorptive due to its bypassing a portion of the small intestine, where the digestion of many vitamins and minerals occurs.

In this procedure a small upper stomach pouch is created by stapling and dividing the stomach into two portions. The lower portion of the stomach will no longer serve as a reservoir for food. An opening is created in the upper pouch and a Y-shaped section of the small intestine is connected to the stomach pouch, bypassing the first part of the small intestine.

This procedure not only reduces the amount of food the stomach can hold, but it also shortens the digestive tract to limit the amount of calories absorbed.  Patients lose weight because the small pouch restricts the amount of food that can be ingested, and the bypassing of the first part of the small intestine decreases the absorption of some calories and nutrients.
